does any one have a rule of thumb for how far a lure will sink @ trolling speeds, with different weights, and how how much line needs to be payed out?? gotta new boat and have never had a gps but we always trolled at 1000-1200 rpm with 16 oz in line sinkers this usually got results. Im a bit clue less now seem like im going to fast @ 3-4 mphas indicated on gps

Re: Trolling Depth

I trool in the Pacific. I have found the best and easiest thing for me since I fish alone is to use 300 feet of wire on a large reel I use a penn senator 14-0 For every 10 feet of wire you let out the lure drops 1 foot, Ofcourse the heavier the lure you might get a little more. I have found when I have a partner I use my down rigger. We trool a atleast 7 knots. I let out all 300 feet my lure is aprox 30 feet down I have greatly inproved my catch ratio.Good luck

Re: Trolling Depth

ot15, there's a book out (spiral bound) that I've seen in sporting goods stores that gives the depth for various lures at various line lengths. Sorry can't remember the name or publisher.
