ok all I just purchased a 2001 Sea Ray SunDeck with a 5.0 Murc/Alpha 1 outdrive. the problem I am having is that the trim guage is stuck in the Full up position. I know that this means that there is a break in the line that goes from the guage to the Engine. The question I have is does this wire need to be a certain wire or can I get some basic wire stock and replace it with that? I also need to know where it connects at the engine so I know where to connect the new wire. I would like to check the continuity from one end to the other on the wire to verify that it is broken but I really have no idea where is it located at in the engine compartment.

thanks

Usually connects at the front end of the engine, near the breaker button. These things are notorious for rotting, and they are a pain to replace. Do a search, many on here run without the gage and do it by feel. Also, get the correct Merc service manual for your motor, look at the sticky, top of this forum. Just my 0.02 Good luck.

rarely do the wires break on the inside of the boat, check on the outside by the sendning unit itself

the trim sender is on the STBD side of the gimbal ring, the trim limit switch is on the PORT side - inspect the wires from the unit to where they pass through the transom

if either set of wires is broken/rotted/chewed - you have to replace the senders, mercruiser does not recommend repairing them and niether do i

on the inside of the boat at the transom plate note the four black wires coming through the transom above the water passage hose, these are the sender wires - two go to the trim pump (switch), two go to a male and female bullet connecter somewhere in the engine wire harness (sender)

Most people trim by feel. If your trim Limit works no worry about over trimming out of the water.
