Well I got my 68 Starchief and, no suprise, she needs a floor and transom. (as well as most all the cabin wood) My question is, Do you drill out the rivits on the top rear trim piece and take off the transom sheet metal cover or do you try and do it in place?

Thanks, Bret

Bret take off that back piece , you will take off the corners then drill rivets out. You should have some bolts in the back also. Oh and under the that back piece you will have to unbolt the wooden stiffners.
It's a fairly easy job.

Is this a i/o ?

Yes, It's an I/O, the outdrive seems in good shape, block's been welded on the engine, but looks to be a good job.

Pull the out drive and then the engine. You will have to remove the bell housing for the drive.
remove gas tank , gives you more room.
Pulling the engine is only a 1.5 hr job. The 2.5 uses the transom as the rear mount. 2 bolts in the rear and one up front. Look at how the rear mount bolts and spacers go in and remember the sequence for reinstall.

I would just unbolt the front lower part where it sits on the wood that way the engine has a stand built in.

The rear bellhousing gasket where it meets the transon on the outside is no longer avalable , I used a sealer between it and the rear transom.

PS
It's a good time to do any engine work if you need to.

If you get stuck or have a ? feel free to ask.
