Hello,

I'm new to iboats and have spent many hours reading posts of all who have endured a boat resto.

I unfortunatly own a Nova 1700 which requires (setting fire too) stringers, floor and transom.
The bottom of the transom is starting to go soft and i'm trying to convert the hull to an outboard as was a Merc stern drive. I started to remove wood but its proving nearly impossible.

My question can i cut the whole transom out leaving 4 inch around each side to join new fiberglass / Plywood to? I will be bolting on an old 235hp Johnson VRO XL shaft.

In the photo attached i have draw a line around where i intend on cutting transom.

Any help would be great as i'm unsure if it is good practice to do the transom this way.

Thank you....Daniel

Its certainly done this way by some pros in oz. "Secondhand boat workshop" (2nd edition) has a good step by step of one done this way, you might be lucky enough to find one in a newsagent still but if not you should be able to order a back issue here......

Welcome to iboats

I would not go that way considering the motor you plan on. What is the problem removing the wood??

Hello,

I ended up setting my circular saw to the exact depth of the inner skin and plywood. From inside the boat i cut what looked like a chess board on the transom inner skin.

Then chiseled each block off, just about had it done in 4 hours.
Boy i'm glad i didn't cut from the outside!

As i plan to hang 235hp off the back would a 1 1/4 be thick enough transom marine plywood?
Also is there any advantage cutting slots in the transom for the stringers, not sure if doing that helps strengthen transom at all?

Thank you to all for your time answering my questions.
