Is it possible to slice a new end plug on a Humminbird tranducer cable? While I was mounting the sonar unit to the mounting bracket I must have cocked it a little and bent one of those little gold pins right over. When I tried to straighten it broke off, of course. So now I wonder if I can find a new plug could I spilce it on with out degrading the performance of the unit?thanks to all. Fishboy

Re: Transducer cable splice?

fishboy,
Don't want to dash your hopes, but I have always heard Not to splice these, as you will forever get bad reading in the future. Replacement would be best, although I do remember someone a while back that did it with success. I don't remember how it was done though. Maybe others have ideas, as I know they are'nt cheap!

EDIT: What transducer do you have? Single or duel beam and what model finder do you have. I may have another one out in the garage.

Re: Transducer cable splice?

Fishboy100
approx two years ago i bought a garmin 160.
early last spring i was out fishing running full speed across the lake and hit my transducer with submerged object probably log of some kind . Any way there was a loud crack and my garmin went dead. After returning to the dock and loading up the boat,i found my transducer head had broken away from the break away mount as it should . However my cable was stuck by the head and was cut completely in two. i slipped a foot long 3/8 gas line over one end of the cable then i soldered the wires together .covered each wire
with shrink tube (dont forget to put shrink tube on wire before soldering). then i pulled gas line
over repair, and filled hose with silicon.now my garmin works same as before repair. no problems of any kind! there is a tin foil covering to separate wires when cable is opened up ,but i believe the small % of repair verses the hole length of cable did not affect operation of unit in any way. WORKS SAME AS NEW :D

Re: Transducer cable splice?

Hey Nosleep, Thanks for the encouraging words. . I did contact Humminbird about it and they said I gotta buy a new transducer, but I will try the repair first. I got nothing to loose but a little time. Maybe try to solder the pin back in. The pin that broke goes to a red wire. There are three wires total, white, black, and red that pass into the sonar unit from the transducer. So I am only dealing with the red one. If it don't work out, I'll mount my old eagle unit. Heck mostly Iam just trying to find the bottom and a look at the structure anyway. If the depth and fish locator suffer a little thats Ok. After the repair, I can take physical depth readings and compare the two finding, and add or subtract the error if any. This might be fun. Thanks for all who responded. Fishboy

Re: Transducer cable splice?

Fishboy, I have a Garmin 160 and I broke off one of the pins inside connector on unit's back (don't ask how....I don't know  ).
It's a 9 pin plug, so I just stuck a small cut up steel nail into plug and be sure when I connect it it will make contact. It is the opposite of your case, but you might try to see if it works.

Re: Transducer cable splice?

Update: I was able to solder in another pin into the male end of the transducer cable. It was very tedious job as the "plug" is only 3/8" by 3/8th" and has the pins placed about 1/8" apart. Thank god it was the end one that broke off. It took three tries to get it to line up ok with the female plug in the display. Ther is no allowance for alignment error. Either its just right or no soap! Now, it seems to work ok. So I guess I am lucky! By the way Humminbird would not sell me a repacement plug. Thanks for your help. Fishboy

Re: Transducer cable splice?

So I'm cruising this forum and see 10 (now 11) replies and wonder "why is there so much interest in this stupid topic?"
Well, heck fire! I see why! It could happen to anyone and the repairs mentioned are nicely elegant, thank you! :D
Can hardly wait to break my own cable so I can fix it myself! (or maybe this is getting to be a long winter...I gotta' go get my boat out of storage tomorrow....)
