How warm/hot should boat trailer hubs normally be after driving 15 miles or so? I recently replaced my bearings and installed Bearing Buddies, and they seem to have plenty of grease, but I noticed that the hubs are very hot to the touch after driving 15 miles or so.

If it's not the brakes, it's too hot. You should be able to put your hand on the hub without burning it. The spindle nut could be too tight. Try jacking up the axle, give the tire a spin. If it turns hard, the nut is too tight.

DTC is right.....if no brakes on that wheel, you can wrap your hand around the hub and hold on to it....even after a highway run. If you got brakes, they will occasionally get hot enough that you shouldn't touch them...spit on them first!if they steam save yer finger skin for something important!

I can hold it without getting burned, but it is still pretty hot.

One more question, thanks in advance for feedback:

Should the rear seal on the back of the hub be flush with the hub or counter sunk until it touches the rear bearing?
