Last year I caught a Rainbow at one of our local lakes. It was a fair sized fish but was unusual because he had a hook and and about 4 inches of leader coming out his butt. At first I thought he had somehow got tangled on my line and it was my hook. Nope, this dude had taken someones hook, broke the line, swallowed it, and passed it. Couldn't figure how he passed the hook, but not the whole leader. If there was still bait on the passed hook, I might have gotten two fish instead of one.

Jerry

Re: Tough Rainbow

Gone fishing
I have caught several with hooks in them, some of the catch and release people will catch a fish and cut the line if the hook is swallowed. The fish can pass it, and the leader was likely to pas as well! However I have lost a few hooks to something, I catch and cook!
Richard

Re: Tough Rainbow

maybe the leader has a big egg sinker still in there- did the fish look swollen like it was plugged up? lol ;)

reminds me of the monkey joke- if you haven't heard it a zillion times lemme know

Re: Tough Rainbow

It is relatively common for fisherman to cut the
line as rwise suggested when a hook is swallowed,
but it may be rare To see the whole hook passed
and still be attached to the line. Most fish will
dissolve the hook in there stomach and only pass
the line.

Re: Tough Rainbow

thats strange as most fish will dislove the hook in a matter of days

Re: Tough Rainbow

i heard last year- that those thoughts of hooks dissolving in days - were way off. with new metal compositions it is more like weeks now, and very stressful. but it helps to cut line 16" above the hook(outside the fish's mouth, and hanging beside it) to help it pass thru the intestines without turning around...
(amended) no, i think the extra line attached was to prevent the hook from turning and blocking food from passing, since they will need to eat to live while the hook is dissolving or passing thru
take that with a grain of salt, it maybe just another slant on the truth. dunno

Re: Tough Rainbow

I should explain that this was a small lake that is stocked in the spring by WFL with several K of keep size rainbows. Close to town so that within a week or two, most of them are caught. Kind of like the place in Lake of the Ozarks where they set off the alarm in the morning after they release from the hatchery. No one cuts the leader and release the fish.

Re: Tough Rainbow

The lake (large spring feed pond) I am fishing in (for rainbow) is stocked every 2 weeks all season. I have seen many cut there line and return the fish to the water, even though the fish are said to not be able to survive when it turns hot! $200.00 fine to do that, but they do it anyway. Most of the people do keep at least there 5 fish limit.

Richard

Re: Tough Rainbow

yeah, same thing for trout streams in N GA. they stock during trout season, and you can tell it if they stocked a day or two before you get there, you can get a limit (8). but they're mostly 9"fish

They go back to some lakes here more than once to release, but I haven't figured which of the 50 or so lakes and when.

Gone fishing
who ever is in charge of the lake should have a schedule, at Prety Water it's even posted in the local bait shop. Somebody knows when and where. Here you can even fish while they are releasing the new fish, just not within 50' of the release!
Richard

Rwise

I could have found out on the web but I really got tired of shore fishing, you know, 15 guys on a pier with only room for 10. So I bought my first boat this winter..Now I take fishing more seriously.

Jerry

Re: Tough Rainbow

Imaginthat...No, never tried Wilderness. Pine lake is a small lake that also has some holdovers that survive til the next year. It's only about 5 miles from the house so I usualyy go there. Wilderness has rules for salmon in the WDFW pamphlet. Ever catch any there?

Jerry

Re: Tough Rainbow

Nope never got any of the kokanee, like you I'm about 5 minutes from Wilderness. And there's a 20+ incher waitin in there that I had a 3-4 minute battle with showed me his broad side a couple of times and then spit the hook at me. Been over to Beaver lake at the end of last year but never been to Pine. Check this sight for a look at lakes http://www.washingtonlakes.com/ and click on King Co. and click on Maple Valley area to see my choices all within 5 -10 minutes of me :D Cya

Re: Tough Rainbow

Hey, I just learned something.

Q. What does the "FLW" in Wal-Mart FLW Tour stand for?

A. FLW stands for Forrest L. Wood, the legendary founder of Ranger Boats. FLW Outdoors named the tour after Wood in 1996 to honor the self-made pioneer of modern bass fishing and to lend credibility to the young tournament circuit.

Re: Tough Rainbow

Imaginethat, thanks for the headsup on the web site. Looks interesting. Also has a Puget Sound and San Juan page. Since the the Kokanee are year round, I might go there next day it doesn't rain.

Jerry
