I have seen latey a lot of post,s asking what is the top speed I should have with a 50 hp Force.

My 17foot Spectrum with 2 people does about 24 to 27 mph depending on the day. This speed was taken from my gps.

It would be intresting to see what other peoples max speed is.

I think around 25 mph is normal.

15' 7" Quantum bass boat, 50 hp Force outboard.

Two people on board, with a hydrofin on the outboard, hits 28 mph.

Two people on board, without the hydrofin installed, hits 31 mph, but tends to porpoise a bit.

Both speeds attained with a Garmin GPS.

Wow Canondale thats little quicker than mine.

Any other pollers so we can get a good average. It would be good to know if your engine is running a little under power or at its best.

I have the same boat as connondale, but, mine is a bayliner bass trophy,it looks identical except for the color. It will get about 30 mph when I'm alone, and 26 with one passenger. But,put 4 or 5 people in it and I;m luckey to get 15mph.

Re: Top speed 50 hp force

Here is an old Chrysler 55. Basically the same engine but has less displacement--only 44 cubic inches. On this 10 foot go-fast boat it reaches 44-45 top speed GPS and on a 15 foot Glastron it reached 27 with only the driver and 22-24 with 3 people.

So, you see, speed is highly dependant upon hull type, size, and load, with smaller hulls being much more sensitive to load than larger.

So, if I'm only getting 11mph and less on a 15' Riviera Tri-hull, then
something's wrong....right?

If so, where do I check first?

I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri 1500. I can hit 28MPH by myself in the boat and 26MPH with a passenger. Haven't tried anything more weight yet.

Re: Top speed 50 hp force

In my 1988 16' BlueFin Skyhawk I get 24 to 27 mph per Garmin GPS with myself and gear (350 to 400 lbs), 20 to 21 mph when I add my Father-inlaw to the mix (500 to 550 lbs). Note: I'm doing a rebuild because of a broken ring on cylinder#1 and the results above are with the broken piston ring, results may improve with the rebuild.

Re: Top speed 50 hp force

Frank made a good point the hull designed and length make a huge difference in performance. It also seems that an extra 100 pounds will make a lot of difference to top speed also. I know these are obvious things to point out but often over looked.

As of today my 15ft tri-hull got 24 mph with two people. I don't have the motor running top notch and I've been told my boat is a slug so I guess that's not so bad.
