Does anyone know anything about Toledo Bend? I know it's large and the bass and crappie fishing are good but not much else. A friend of mine is trying to talk me into buying a lot down there (it's pretty cheap, especially compared to Colorado prices) for a vacation home and I just don't know much about the area.

What is the lake like (deep, shallow, weedy etc), the geography of the area (hilly, plains, swampy etc), what's the weather like and any other info anyone has on the area would be appreciated.

Re: Toledo Bend???

The inlaws live about 5 miles from T/B. I grew up about 190 miles from there...fished it few times. My last trip there was Thanksgiving 2004.

It's huge - 182,000 acres, most of which is standing timber...rather, it was standing timber when they built it in the 60's. Now most of the timber has broken off at the waterline, so now you have the river channel and creek channels bordered on both sides by stumpfields. Over the years, marinas and fish camps have cleared out boat lanes, most of which are marked pretty well. Lots of coves, sloughs, creeks. Bottom line, it's one big honkin fish habitat. Loaded with bass, white bass, striped bass, sunfish, crappie, catfish. Max depth 110 feet. Great fishing, not so great skiing. Gary Yamamoto opened a bait shop there in 2003.

The area is piney woods, in fact it borders the Sabine National Forest. Wooded rolling hills, mostly rural, mostly cattle ranching and chicken farming, and timber, dotted with small towns. You might have to drive 30, 35 miles to get to a McDonalds and a Walmart.

Hot in the summer (high 90's), apart from a couple or three ice storms a year, winters are mild. Snow maybe every 2 or 3 years stays on the ground a day or two. Not much spring or fall to speak of.

My opinion...perfect place for a lake house!

Re: Toledo Bend???

Thanks alot for the info jtexas; I grew up in South Texas myself (Rio Grande Valley) but haven't ever been up to that area. I was mostly a bayfishing guy back then anyway.

All that sounds really good, I looked up a bunch of info online today on Toledo Bend and it looks like a nice place. The friends that are looking down there are supposed to be sending me some pictures soon too so we'll see.

Re: Toledo Bend???

If you want to fish, Toledo is the place to be. If you are more into boating in open water, go just to the west to sam rayburn.

Re: Toledo Bend???

Is Sam Rayburn gonna be pretty affordable too?? Similar lakefront properties available? To be honest with you, it looks like Rayburn is 30 min or so away and I would almost rather have a "recreational" lake lot (especially if it's more likely to be wooded) and be able to run on over to Toledo Bend to fish if I want to. I would think that Toledo would have more boat traffic and tournaments too.

Re: Toledo Bend???

It is more expensive than Toledo, but still affordable compared to other parts of the country and it is an open lake that you can run freely without having to watch for boat lanes. The fishing on Rayburn is not bad by any extent. Given the choice, having been on both I choose Rayburn 9 out or 10 times. My wife is a real estate agent and can sell anywhere in Texas, if you want more info or want to discuss property on either lake let me know and we can get you her contact information.
