I have a '74 Merc 80 hp with a cylinder that has lost compression. 2 mechanics so far have told me not to bother with it b/c it is too old and they can't guarantee anything. Does anyone have an opion before I start seriously looking for a replacement? Thanks!

Re: to rebuild or not to rebuild

The motor only has a value of maybe $500 in good running condition. Maybe $200-$300 for parts. Not really worth sinking a lot of money into. Ive got an '80 90 hp that runs great that I love, but I would never consider sinking very much money into repairs when I could buy a good shape newer motor for less.

Re: to rebuild or not to rebuild

Thanks mbb- I really appreciate the input. It seems as though our thinking is along the same lines. A few years ago I put a newer (late 80s) lower unit on. Do you think I could get anything for this or other parts?
