Hi everyone,

SPECS: 470 merc 190 HP I/O

4 weeks ago I started hearing a knocking sound when I start the boat. If I increased the idle, it would stop knocking. I sent a mechanic to listen to it and he said it sounds like the Timing chain. The boat still performs as it did all spring & summer...very sluggish if I full Throtle it. (I wouldn,t try water sking)but otherwise fine. No problems starting or crusing.

Questions: 1) Whats involved in replacing it? DAYS? MONEY?

(2) If I decide to fix it next spring, will it do more damage to other parts if I still drive it??

Thanks,
Lou

Re: Timing chain Replaced? Help Please

Well...it's not too bad to replace the timing chain and tensioner if you have access to the front of the motor. (it can be done in most boats w/o removing the motor)

Just be prepared. Diagnosing a noise by sound may not be the true problem. A knocking noise can be a rod bearing going, a bad valve or lifter. I would just hate to see you do a timing chain and have the same problem next season.

Get another opinion.

Bob (470/170 owner)
