Although an old man , I am a young boater( this phrase was borrowed from Thomas Jefferson). I live along a river and most of the boats have their motors tilted while tied up. I dont understand why? Would appreciate any help anyone out there can give.

It prevents, or at least reduces marine growth, Bill.

It also keeps the lower unit gearbox up out of the water. The gearbox is supposed to be waterproof but anything can happen. I'm old too and I think it's a custom that's carried over from the earlier days of boating when the seals weren't all that long-lived. Also keeps motor from being struck by debris.
