I have a 1988 smokercraft 3.0L I/O mercuiser

When I raise or lower the t/t is cuts out and I have to press either up or down what ever I am using. Some times it won't go the first time I so to use it. Plus another thing, my gauge for the tilt/trim is out of wack. It usually don't work, and when it does it goes from showing lower unit all the way up to all the way down with in seconds and not being no where near all the way down.

I am new to boats, so any help would be apreciated. Please give a little detail as I am not familiar with this stuff. I know where the pump is for it and it has fluid in it. Should I change the fluid and what would I use if so.

Thanks

Re: Tilt/trim problems

Below is a link to a free online Merc manual for your drive system.
Look at section 1C for troubleshooting the trim system. It has a wiring diagram and instructions.
Also, section 5 has even more info on your particular pump.
Section 4A describes how to repair and adjust your trim sender on the outdrive.

After all that, it sounds like most of your problems may be corroded or loose electrical terminals.
