Ok, completely new to boating and the first time out was not successful. I bought a 1995 Mariner 75 (Polar) boat last November and everything worked fine. Today after getting to the launch I rised the the motor to remove the motor/tow brace and then couldn't lower the motor. I noticed fluid leaking from the top of the cylinder and the motor will not lower. The pump/motor is operating but the motor will not lower. How do I lower the motor? The person I bought the boat from said the pump motor was replaced about two years ago but didn't mention anything about the cylinder. Is it better to replace the complete system motor/pump/cylinder or just rebuild? I have tried to search the site for my answers but nothing seems to link the lower of the motor or the cylinder problem.

Re: Tilt/Trim Problem

The whole Power trim and tilt assembly is probably upwards of a grand new. rebuilding it is probably about 150-250 bucks in parts, and a day of labor (gotta pull the whole engine to get to it) There is a manual release on the side of the engine. Just a slotted screw..turn it.

good luck

What purpose does the c-clip have on the release screw?

Re: Tilt/Trim Problem

sometimes there is a bracket that flips down to hold the motor up to keep it from dropping on the road...raise the motor up and look around where the motor connects to the transom brakcets for a small bracket to move out of the way...this may or may not be your problem...

The only thing I can figure out it to keep from backing the relief valve/screw out all the way.

I just replaced my trim motor Friday and that made me say hummm as well.

I had to remove the clip so I could remove the relief screw to pull the system out between the transom mount.

Thanks, when I had a switch issue last year we had to take it off to manually release the motor so we could get it up. I was so happy to get it up and locked I forgot where we put the clip and can't find it. I just check the tightness of the screw every once in a while :)
