tilt-trim issues

I followed a troubleshooting guide posted previously by Don S. and it indicates that my relay is bad. My boat is an 89 OMC (502BPRMED) with a one piece relay box that mounts to the hydraulic fluid reservoir and it is a VERY expensive part (https://www.crowleymarine.com/parts/2982.cfm). I saw this wiring diagram in another post that shows two separate relays, one down and one up.

When I search for tilt trim solenoids they seem to be pretty inexpensive so I am wondering if some minor wiring changes are possible to convert my system to separate solenoids/relays.

Its a 12V DC motor, rewiring to use 2 separate relays will work. The original just has 2 relays in one case

Are you asking if you can re-wire it and use the bigger old style relays that are much cheaper? as long as its wired the same I don't see why not. I have those big relays on mine, they have worked fine all this time.On the older style ones they were mounted on the shift bellcrank bracket. but you can make up an panel and put them elsewhere if you don't have room there.

Yes, I was wanting to confirm my thought process to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Thanks Lou and alldodge for your feedback!!

I have ordered some waterproof relays and will give a report when I am done.

I got it all wired up and it works great. The switch on the throttle handle was no good so I wired a momentary toggle switch to the dash. Props to dangar marine on YouTube. His video (https://youtu.be/T0Vf7mSUlUY) explained how relays work and gave step by step instructions and wiring diagrams to use off the shelf automotive relays for tilt and trim motors on a boat.

here’s a picture of my setup.
