Howdy, needtofish. This may not mean anything, but I had a 1980 'Rude 100 that behaved exactly the same way. I topped off the oil in the cylinder three times before it started working correctly. It was still working when I traded it. There must have been air in the oil that had to foam out slowly.

Worth a try.

Good luck.
JB

Re: TILT AND TRIM

I have a very slow leak in my trim around the rams that raise the engine, and at the beginning of each season, I have had to add fluid(79 Johnson 150).I took the hose to my lower unit oil pump off and the fitting was the same size as the trim fitting (where I add fluid) and attached a funnel to the other end. With fluid in the funnel, I tilted the engine up and down until all the air was out, and it is working fine now.

Good luck.

BTW, by lower unit oil pump, I meant the little hand pump that you can use to pump gear lube out of the bottle into the lower unit when you are changing it. It has a plastic tube with a screw in fitting on the end.

needtofish, I can't help you diagnose your problem, but if it turns out your pump assembly is bad then I have a used one you might be interested in. If so, email me at jennis@acxiom.com. Best of luck.
