Throttle sticks in gear

Hello all. I have an ‘01 Chaparral SSI 196 with a 5.0 efi mercruiser. I’ve been having an issue with 1) it staying in forward gear after clicking back into neutral
and 2) occasionally having it stick in reverse, no matter if the throttle is in the forward or reverse position. I have found the culprit of why it sticks in reverse. In the attached image there is a little brass thing (excuse my lack of information regarding the correct name) that slides out of the plastic thing. When that happens is when it sticks in reverse. Ideas/thoughts?

I would start by replacing your lower shift cable

There should be a thin cotter pin (item 6) which holds the barrel nut in place and keeps it from sliding out. If you cannot find a cotter pin you can use a thin wire (bailing wire) in its place. Push the barrel nut fully in, then there will be a small hole on top and bottom. Wire does not go thru the barrel nut,
