Throttle position sensor testing?

Hi guys!

What is the proper way to test the TPS?

The manual says to check voltage, and it should be at .7 for idle, and 4.5 at WOT.

How do you test it?

Do you pierce the wires with a probe? I would rather not. Do you need a scan tool? Does the engine have to be running, like the book says, or can you just turn the ignition on and move the lever through its range?

I'm trying to diagnose a hard warm start condition. It will start fine with the throttle advanced a little, but not at all with the throttle straight up. IAC has just been replaced. '02 Merc 6.2 MPI 0M325859

Howdy,

Any TPS is just a simple variable resistor.

You could disconnect it and check it with an ohm meter, but probably the best way to test it in the circuit is with a scan tool.

Bummer. I was afraid of that.

I am currently short exactly one scan tool. If I could measure it with a volt meter, I'd be in business.
