This was one of a series of stories by Jean Shepard, writing in Playboy magazine in the early '60's. He wrote about being a boy in middle America and, I swear, he hit every button a typical guy has who grew up in that time and place. I bought the magazine just for his stories and, uh, endured the rest of the contents.
If you come across his writings, take the time to pick one out and begin to read it. I guarantee you'll be captive until you've finished it. (Hey, she'll understand. Just show her the advertisements...)
