well ive done it again. all i wanted was a boat i could tinker with during the week and something that i could fish on during the weekends. now i have a mess and need some help i have a boat already in the yard a little skiff/flats boat that i only gave a few hundred dollars for to help a friend out. well i thought theres a lake around the corner lets go fishing. i had a blast till i noticed that it was kinda sinking. so not to upset i started to think about uncapping it and having a boat as a project. then i thought that realy i need a boat to go fishing while i do this so i looked for a solid boat and thought i had found a good one for 2500 with every thing included. we even test ran it on the lake and i was a happy camper.

so i load up the wife for a enjoyable day of fishing. i know im new to boating but i have driven boats and they are normally fun to drive and easy handling. this 1991 stratos 16v was a handful and wasnt fun at all. the boat runs slow no problem and runs fast no problem but inbetween isnt fun. when we test ran it we were like kids in a candy store so we punched the boat onto plan and it would rear up and with in 100 feet it was on plan at 30mph and handling like a sports car. it did seem to dip its transom when we slowed down but i thought that was my inexperiance coming of plain.

well with the wife i didnt want to punch it as that would have got a ear bashing. this is when i realised i have a unballanced boat thats not going to run between 10 and 25mph no matter how the boat is trimmed good job we had shades on as we were looking straight up at the sun. slowing down was even worse no matter if i tryed to slow down over a 1/4 mile it still dipped its transom. even when parked the boat didnt level out properly now the wife is upset and agrivated she wont drive so i couldnt drink and just to make it worse i thought i would try my new bait caster rod that i bought a while back. now i have a tangled up reel a boat that would handle right and a wife that **********.

i hope some of you get a laugh out of this. ive been kinda blaming myself. bad driving etc so i went to take a closer look at the boat and i think the problem is the label or could be that big hunk of a outboard hanging on the back

boat 2.jpgboat.jpghandle 1.jpghandle 2.jpgjack plate.jpg

thats a 140 evinrude with power trim e140tlcua. i thought it was odd that the controls ended up covering half the label.

would a over weight motor real upset the boat that badly
i have a 70 hp evinrude e70elcrd not sure if thats a option

I would try to get a look at the stickers and plates to see if there is a max hp rating. You may also want to look into adjustable trim tabs that you can use on the fly.

Was 30 mph top speed?

I'm sure the oversize motor has something to do with it... and it looks like the motor is bolted to a jack plate instead of the transom?... this could be part of it too. A larger than normal amount of weight set further back off the transom than designed.

Another thing may be that your floatation foam is waterlogged adding a lot of extra weight to your boat. Did you check for this? How new is the carpet? Brand new?

A lot of fiberglass boats for sale with new carpet are just decked and new carpeted over waterlogged foam and rotten stringers for a quick sale to an unsuspecting buyer.

You should have bought an aluminum boat.

the boat goes way faster gps had it at 46 and that wasnt flat out. the boat is solid as you will see in another post when i ask for the best way to seal a hole in the fiberglass of the stringer that was drilled to check them why someone would do this then use marine silicone to close them seems dumb to me. i have read that the 140 is the same weight as the 115 i dont know if thats true or not so as the boat is rated for 120 it should be able to surport the weight. the boat did have trim tabs as the holes were sealed with some type of white sealer not silicone at least, the only bad thing i see is that some type of insect got into some wood that looks like a box used for a foam pour (not connected to transom more glassed up to) so the back is now covered in powdered insecticide so is the ground around the boat as i dont need that near the house. out of the water tilted backward for over 24 hours and no signs of water in the back (towel dryed the back when we got home so i could see if it was retaining anything even the insecticide is still dry). maybe its just the wrong type of boat for what im looking for or im just driving it wrong (bad trimming etc)

Sounds like your wife needs to stay home, instead of going with you and chirping in your ear every time something goes wrong. ;)

I may be way off base, but any chance you have a spun prop?

I'll be sure to check out your next thread.

About your trimming: Motor trimmed all the way down when taking off, then bump the up button when the boat gets on plane to increase speed.

Is your motor trimmed all the way down in those pics? If so, there's your problem right there. Post a pic of your motor trimmed all the way down.

This is an extreme example of what happens when you have your motor trimmed up too high on takeoff.

Look familiar?

On another note: Check with your insurance company to see if they cover an overpowered hull. Some insurance companies have a problem with that.

nearly wet myself laughing at that u-tube clip. mine isnt that bad. its to late tonight been a 12hr shift so i will set the trim fully back tommorrow and see what that looks like. not realy sure how to do that to be honest whats the set up that will allow me to use the trim at the moment its in the tilt setting or is full tilt back the same as full trim back?

what do i do if i want to go slower than plane speed? say a boat is coming the other way at speed causing a huge wake i dont dont want to hit that to fast?
once the boat hits about 25 shes on plane and at 30 plus shes a joy to drive just dont know how to do 15mph with her.
coming off plain i should trim the motor fully down then.....add more power to keep nose down and to dodge the stern wave?

i havent got insurance yet. think i can get my hands on a 115hp evinrude for free from a friend so im going to compression test that before i decied where i go from here. if the engine was 140hp new i would be surprissed if its still 140hp at this age but i would rather have a correctly rated boat. if the 115hp is to far gone then i guess i will have to call and see if they would even insure it.

Your trim button should be an up/down toggle on the throttle handle or steering wheel that you control with your thumb. You can back off of the throttle without trimming down, you can also trim down to slow the boat... and if you don't slow way down you don't have to trim the motor back down to accelerate. Trimmed all the way down is for the "hole" shot from a stand still or slow speed. You will have to experiment with it until you get the feel for it... but any time your bow raises way up on throttling up a little light should go off in your head to trim down.

Post a pic of your throttle control and steering wheel when you get a chance so we can find your trim button.

Re: "theres one born every minute" wifes quote

sorry i must have confussed you....kinda confussed myself....my trim is on the lever and i have a trim gauge what i dont know is how to use it unless the boat is in the water and running......would like to trim it fully down to see what it looks like while on the trailer.

also u got me thinking about changing the motor to a 115 so i went to look at it and now im realy confussed the block stamp number is 397071
120 42

and the freeze plug says e120txcdc im thinking that this is a correct 120hp the sticker on the bracket says E140TLCUA so im thinking this is a 120 on a 140 trim bracket might be best to put this on the evinrude engine thread and see if that sounds correct

anyway back to the handling i think i understand what you are saying and that sorts the speeding up.....my boat is horrible coming off plane to the point it likes to dunk the transom and then water likes to run into the back door the only way i have found of stopping this is to use a little power just as she starts to tilt up as she comes of plane. its kinda like the boat slows down then seems to tilt the bow up a little and skid to a halt then the wave catchs up

Don't worry about the trim gauge right now, just press the down button until the top of the motor won't tilt back any further and the leg is closest to the transom... that's trimmed all the way down.

Rule of thumb, trim down to keep the bow down and keep the boat firmly on the water, trim up to bring the bow up once on plane and loosen or free the boat up.

I would trim it all the way down to take off and keep most of the way down until you get more used to running it.

I don't have a lot of experience with bass boat type hulls, but I worked on a Bullet hull with a 150 Mariner for a co worker last year that was like you describe, it would jump on plane and stay there down to about 25 MPH or so, and it was fine idling in no wake zones but it was a PITA to run from idle to 25 or 30. The only way I could get it to behave was to keep it trimmed way down at low speed and when it came time to bring it off of plane I just pulled the handle back and didn't look over my shoulder. Try putting as much weight in the bow as you can, that might help too.

Do you have close up pics of the transom?
Looks a little too big for the boat. Nice boat.
Never know until you try the 70. might move out better and get into those hard to get fishing spots?
140 look good on the back of my 1700 Bayliner but probably run the same.

i would try the 70 but i dont want to drill the transom and the 70 is a manaul tilt. going to the fiberglass store this weekend to get some stuff for this boat and my project boat which the 70 is from. planing to get out the weekend after with a friend who claims he can tame it down (taking 4 bags of sand just in case hes wrong). i would love to remove the jack plate and the fin on the back of the motor and try trim tabs but the motor would be about 3" lower with out the jack and that means leaving it tilted when its on the trailer or digging a hole. no idea if auto trim tabs are worth trying especially as its a stratos so the back isnt real straight so the tabs might not bolt to the transom.
i think that i can live with having to hole shot it when even i want to go but i carnt live with the way it comes off plane

We also need a close up pic of you motor in relation to the bottom of your hull (keel). That jack plate may have you messed up on your motor height too.

The cavitation plate on your motor should be even with the bottom of your hull/keel, if your cav plate is too high in relation to the bottom of your hull this can affect performance too.

Check this out.
http://www.smalloutboards.com/shaft.htm

I'm not sure if your jack plate is hydraulic or not, but if you can move the motor up and down with it you need to even up your cav plate and keel and leave it there.

For a motor that big you should be using a transom saver when the boat is on the trailer.

hmmm my motor has a 20" shaft going by the web link you sent me my cav plate is about 17" down my transom is 18" not including the little 4" extra piece that has the drain plug in it. i will get pics when its light outside and i will have to find a level as my transom is not level more tilted backwards......going to be a happy camper if i need to get rid of that jack plate as i never liked the look of it. i have a transom saver not sure if it will work as the rear roller on the trailer is a little under the boat so i will try that tommorrow as well
removing the jack plate will drop the motor nearly 4 inches putting my cav plate near the drain hole

Re: "theres one born every minute" wifes quote

well now im getting flustered with this. im 99% sure that when the motor is placed on the transom that it will not be able to tilt with out smashing the wiring etc. im seriously looking at the 70hp but im pondering a few things

1. the 70 doesnt have tilt and trim
2. the 70 doesnt have temp sensor
3. need to get some cash back one day
4. does the tilt trim on the 120 realy fit the 70 or not
5. can the 120 be sold with out a tilt trim
6. is the 120 worth more in parts
7. should i sell both motors and controls and look for a 90 which is what i realy want
8. 70 pushed a flats type boat 30 when it was water logged will it get this one to 35
9. wife hates the boat and wont go fishing unless its made into a tame boat
