I saw a posting where someone reccomended renting an engine hoist for $50 for a weekend to change out an outboard motor.

I thought I'd start a thread for lower cost options.

I use a branch on a big oak tree with a come along chained to it. Not very professional looking, but now I know that it saved me fifty bucks.

Re: The Lighter Side- engine hoists?

I have oak trees and pecan trees and a variety of other trees. If you use a tree be sure it is a strong enough limb to lift the engine.

If you don't have a tree, a strong cross beam in your garage with vertical braces set on either side of the boat will take around 400lb.

A block and tackle works as well as a come-along.

Most engines need only be lifted a couple of inches if at all.

I use the front loader bucket on "Big Orange", my Kubota.

Good luck. :)

$50 is cheap, compared to what a shop would charge to do it. Although I guess a tree is cheaper!! A couple of friends are pretty cheap, too!

I just use a large "eye"bolt screwed to the ceiling joist in my garage, and a come-along I bought at a garage sale for $2.00. Motors are not that heavy.

Many moons ago before building my current shop, I worked out of the garage at my home. I bolted a plate to the header above my garage door and attached a lifting ring to the plate. Don't know how much it was rated at, but did unload a 3208 Cat with it once.

many moons ago i swapped an old 125 johnson for a 200 hp merc....

put a 4x4 on my garage roof, 12' long projecting 6" beyond the frront of the garage. had one of my kids sit on the long (12') end. block and tackle worked fine....

I lifted the engine out of a Ford pickup with a couple of 2x4's nailed together spread across trusses in the my garage, and a come-a-long.

Didn't even deflect the trusses.

My brother and I put on an old v-4 50 hp Evinrude just by ourselves back in the good old days when I was a dumb kid. Saved the money for the hoist, and had it not been for the $67,000 in subsequent chiropractor bills since, it would have been a great savings of money!

lol plywoody! i put up a forum on this once.
i was thinking i'd need to build something huge to pull a 70hp outboard.
i ended up simply cutting a piece of scrap 4x4 to fit between two ceiling joists and put 4ea 3" woodscrews in each side. threw a chain over it and used a comealong to pull the engine-no problem.

Got trees. Got ceiling joists. Got neighbors. Got six-pack. Got comealong. He**, I got all that stuff. The handy thing about an engine hoist though, is it's eaiser to jockey the hoist the the boat on a trailer. 'tis fer me anyway.

c/6

Hooty

Re: The Lighter Side- engine hoists?

Think I've tried out most of the ideas mentioned, but I'm thinking about an engine hoist too. I screwed up my back this summer trying to lift a 10hp (only about 80 lbs) -- actually trying to keep it from falling into the water. I saved the motor, but maybe should have let it go.

I've seen some engine hosts on Ebay for about $150 new -- makes me think I might be able to find a decent used one for $75-$100 or so.

Re: The Lighter Side- engine hoists?

I should have known I would have some 'challenges' when the seller gave me a spare engine for a 24' T-Craft, but I endded up swapping engines four times over the 7 years of ownership.

I got one of those j-hooks that go on the front of jeeps/trucks and drilled two holes over the garage door. It went through the load-bearing member (concrete). The boat was slung low enough to pull the boat out from under the engine.

I painted the j-hook the same color as the house and it's still there. I've only been asked about it once.

The top load was a fully assembled Chevy 350, with no strain.
