I got the 180* issue fixed with the timing, and the motor purrs like a kitten, at least until it starts getting hot. (in the driveway, with a muff) I checked around the outdrive pump and it felt hot, so I took it apart and saw no water entering the pump when the hose was on full, unless I manually clamped the muffs real tight. Then the water rose up in the pump. The temp guage wasn't working, so I'm not sure why, unless there's no water in there to warm it up?? Any suggestions?

Weak hose pressure or excessive hose length or small diameter hose can all cause your problem. The raw water pump also sucks the water up to the pump. If there is enough hose water pressure there to get past all the air.
If the impeller looks good, back it into the water and start it up and see how it acts.

I had about 100' of 5/8" hose and my water pressure is not that good. (I'm on a well with a pump) I had to hold the muffs tight to get any water up to the pump at all. Cheap muffs?
I'm not quite sure how to test in driveway. We've got a lot more work to do before going to lake.
Is there any possibility of an obstruction in the lower unit?

With 100' of 5/8" hose, even with good water pressure you probably would overheat. Way too much restriction.

Take a 55 gal plastic garbage can and cut it off at the height of you cavitation plate. Fill with water and leave hose on. Just do not put in gear. Rev it too high and most of the water will not be in the tub. keep an eye on it while running. If tub gets too low, shut the engine off.
