I switched engines. I went from using a 87 2stroke 70hp Johnson to using a 2000 50hp 4stroke Mercury.
My question is concerning the tachometer.
Can i use the old tach from the johnson or will i need a new one?
The johnson tach reads an ac signal from the stator, can it be hooked up the same way on the merc?

Re: Tachometer Question.

Get on the Tach manufacturer's web site and look up the application chart for that Tach. Newer tachs are universal for Merc, OMC and sterndrives and inboards. What have you got?

Re: Tachometer Question.

Its an old omc tach. It does have an adjustable pulse switch on the back, but the tach has been long obselete. It works fine with the johnson but i now have a merc 4stroke on the boat.

Re: Tachometer Question.

The OMC tach used to be different than the universal tach. I would be surprized is you can make it work, however, it is worth a test.
