tachometer question

I have a question I hope someone can answer. A friend of mine has a Rotorway 133 Helicoptor Engine and asked me to post the question on this board, so here goes. He is trying to find out how to hook up a tachometer to the magnito(spelling?). He hooked it up to the grounding terminal on the mag. and fried the tach. He thinks maybe an induction pickup off the spark plug wire might work. Any thoughts on this would be very helpful. (I know this is not a boat motor, but he needs some help.)

Thanks,

Jester

Re: tachometer question

Is your friend using the Rotorway engine on an airboat or similar watercraft? I don't know about the Rotorway engine, but some helo engines use a 28 Vdc system. I will check into how to hook up tach and get back with you.

Keep the bait in the Slick....

Re: tachometer question

Jester, did a little checking and found out that your friend's engine does run off a 28 volt system, assuming that the 133 is a four cylinder. The tach for those engines have to run off the drive gear and are not electrically.

Keep the bait in the Slick.....
