Hey guys,
On my 93 200 Johnson, my tach seems to be reading correct at idle, but when I am running it is reading like 6000 and fluctuates. What could be the problem?????

Your motor can run 6000. It probably has a rev limiter in the powerpack at 6,700.

If you want to get it down a bit you would need to increase pitch on your propeller.

Be sure to use a second means to verify the RPM before spending money on a propeller.

Borrow a digital inductive timing light with a RPM read. You just clamp the fingers around a spark plug wire. If you do your own work, you can use the device a lot.

You can also get an idea from the speed. The maximum theoretical speed at 6,000 RPM for a 17 pitch prop on your motor is 51.97 MPH.

Im pushing a 1983 248 wellcraft sportsman. Top speed is about 38 mph. I cruise at about 30. The boat weighs 3750lbs dry. prob 5500 fully loaded. I thought that was pretty good. What do you think????
