Tech has been acting up a little, but yesterday was really weird. As I have stated before I am a retired toolmaker, not an electrician, but do have a very basic understanding. I have a 1992 Merchant classic 40 up two stroke in like new condition. As I was running on the lake the tech would raise up from 500 to 1000 rpm but the motor did not increase in speed. Sometimes it would drop 500 rpm. Motor runs great, idles great, easy to start. Tach is giving false readings....so..is it time to replace the tach, or should I be looking at other issues ? When everything is turned off, the tech reads about 1000 rpm, when the key is turned on, the tach needle drops to 0. Not sure what else to add, but open to recomendations and suggestions.

if there is a selector switch on the tack for 4, 6, 8, etc. note where the switch is , and move it back and forth cleaning the contacts. this works some of the time to fix a flaky tack
