system check tach question

'97 Evinrude 90hp
VRO system removed by previous owner.
Check engine light stays on.
Other lights come on randomly, in sequence, and go back off.
Tech @ shop says the unit is bad and needs replaced.
do I replace it with the same part or do i need something different because of
the VRO being removed? No issues with motor, runs like a champ.

Install a standard tach

will the 'standard' tach just plug in to the system check harness? will i need to install temp gauge seperately ?
will the alarm still work?

Engines of that vintage should have the system check tachometer DIP plugs plus ring terminals for the black, purple and grey leads to a standard tachometer. You might take a look for those, under the dashboard.
