I just got my boat out of storage, and the shop told me that my synthane washers are gone, hence my loose outdrive and sloppy steering. These seem like a very simple fix, but I don't quite know where to begin. Has anyone replaced synthane washers before? Is it difficult? Does anyone have any pictures or threads about it?

Re: Synthane washers

They are not a big cause of steering slop. There might be a slight movement from side to side of the bellhousing, but that does not cause much slop in the steering but when missing the sure to cause the bellhousing and gimbal ring to wear.

Those washers are maybe 1/32" thick if that much, and go between the gimbal ring and the bellhousing. You will have to remove the drive, remove the trim sender and limit switches. Then remove the pivot pins. You should be able to pull bellhousing out enough with the bellows hooked up to put the washers in. New ones have an adheisive on one side. Clean all the grease off the gimbal ring and center the washers over the hole. Use the pivot bolts to help center the washers.

Then put it all back together. Torque the pivot bolts to 100 ft lbs, put the drive back on with new gaskets, readjust the trim limit and trim sender and you are good to go. http://www.4shared.com/office/L17_ufPa/06__Drives_R-A1_83-90.html?
