I am new to the forum:
I recently purchased a 14 Aluminum flat bottom jon boat. My fishing partner and I are going to spruce it, because the old flat white paint job does not suit our style at all. I have a couple of rivets to rebuck and one to totally replace.
We need to get the old paint off, and I was wondering what the best/easiest way to do this?? I want to do it safely, easily, and cost efficiently.... I have an angle grinder and some cup style wire wheels. Do you think this would be the best way to tackle this part of the project??
Also, should I take it all the way down to the bare aluminum, or should I just rough up the surface of the old paint?

I will have to post some pics of the tinny, throughout the restoration project.

Thanks for your help, in advance.

Re: Stripping Old Paint off Boat

A lot of folks have had luck with CitriStrip paint remover. Soda blasting is also another great method. It costs a little, but i will get everything down to raw metal without heating or warping the metal. OF course, you can always just sand it down too. Unless you're trying to do a full resto, or you want the raw aluminum look, you don't really need to go down to bare metal. Just sand of the loose bits, wipe down with acetone or a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water, prime with Zinc Chromate self-etching primer and paint. A lot of people like good 'ol Rustoleum marine paint. I just used some Rustoleum oil based enamel on my decks and it's awesome! I got almost three coats out of one little quart container. It takes a while to fully cure, but when it does it's hard as a rock and nice and glossy. Cheers!
