I have a 1985 bayliner with OMC stern drive.I replaced the stern drive with used one. Now when I steer to right it goes left, and when I steer left it goes right. Am I missing something? Can anyone help me?

Welcome aboard.

Did she steer correctly before replacing the drive?

Did you replace the steering cable? Is it rack and pinon steering or Rotary steering?

In R&P steering the Rack (cable) needs to sit on top of the pinon, or she will steer backwards.

On Rotary steering the steering cable can be put in the wrong hole of the steering head, causing backward steering.

I did not touch any of the steering. All I did was replace the stern drive and it is rotary steering. I think they call it TRU-COURSE STEERING. Could the worm wheel in stern drive been put in wrong? Like I said every thing worked good intel I put the stern drive in. Could it be wrong spur gear or wrong worm gear?

If you didnt change the steering cable or helm, and only changed the outdrive, then its not possible

Please list exactly what you have done, touched, or adjusted

Hey @kenny nunez , am I missing something with true course?

I did not touch or adjust any thing, all I did was put the stern drive on the back of the boat. The steering work before I put the stern drive on.

I'll hand out some friendly advice. The guys on here will bend over BACKWARD to help you, that's how I Found them back in the days of dial-up internet. They have been pulling my grease out of the fire for well over 10 years.

I have no idea how to fix your steering. I THINK Bondo was saying that THIS:

is where your problem lies. ie: worm wheel in wrong, wrong spur gear or worm gear.

Remember you'll catch more flies with honey...

If you want a thorough diagnosis, you'll need a thorough explanation of everything you did to the boat/motor/drive. Then give it some time, its nice weather out and many are on the water. I plan on being there this week.

Or drop it off at the nearest Marine Repair Center and find out that BOAT is really an acronym for "Bust Out Another Thousand!"
