I'm looking for info on removing the steering wheel on my boat. It's rack steering on my o/b and a Morse steering system. I removed the center cover and the nut. It looks like there is a tab or key in a groove (hard to see) in the shaft. Tryed to pull it off but don't want to break the wheeel. Is it just very tight? Should I tap on it with a hammer?
Any help would be great.

put the nut back on until its flush with the stud, while pulling up on the wheel, I will wedge my legs in it if there is clearence, strike the nut/stud sharply and squarely with a hammer in the 32OZ range.

if its not to salted on it will pop off.

Re: Steering wheel removal?

There are probably 2 bolt holes 1 on either side of the center stud. Go to the auto parts store and get a harmanic balancer/wheel puller and use those 2 holes to secure the puller to the wheel then pull the steering wheel off. and when you want to put it back on get it lined up and use the center nut to tighten it dowm while holding the wheel from turning
good luck

Well,....... Seeing that the score is 2 to 2,......

I'll give you alittle hint as to Why Rodbolt's method Is the Right Way,..............

I'll give 10 to 1 odds that there Are No Threaded Holes in the hub of a boat Steering Wheel...........
Ayuh,....... No How,.... No Way to mount a Puller..........

Soooo,... Like Rodbolt Says,.......
Grab the Wheel,... Pull,+ Whack the Nut/ Stem......
You'll have the Wheel in your hands in just a Second,.........
Without buying New Tools.......

Re: Steering wheel removal?

If your steering shaft is keyed, it won't be threaded. The shaft is likely tapered, hence the tightness. Rodbolt and Bondo are giving you good advice. But the important part is this. DO NOT take the big nut all the way off. Leave it screwed on loosely, with a slight gap between the inner edge of the nut and the steering wheel. Then, when it breaks loose, it won't take out your 2 front teeth. Once it breaks loose, remove the nut and the wheel will pretty much fall off.

Re: Steering wheel removal?

It wouldn't do any harm to put a little penetrating oil around the shaft and leave it overnight before you start hammering.
