Hi guys I’m new here just trying to see if I can get a little help… I have a 1990 suzuki dt30c.. I have submerged whole lower unit in 55 gallon pail when I start the engine it pee out the pee hole but after about 20 seconds it’s starts spluttering water and then it completely stops and only hot air comes out the pee hole… any idea what it can be? I changed the impeller, plate and gasket and nothing.. I sprayed water up the water tube that connects to the impeller pump and water comes out perfect… I also turned the motor on with the thermostat off and water will gush out perfect from pee hole and thermostat housing. I kinda feel exhaust coming out the thermostat area while the water is coming out don’t know if that’s normal… once I put the thermostat back in the pee hole stops squirting and air starts to blow out again.. I tried it with just the thermostat cover and no thermostat and same result… idk what could be wrong… any help would be appreciated thank you!

sounds like a blown head gasket or crack that lets combustion gases into the water jackets .
leak down test with compressed air should indicate that

Thank u for the response… I since took out the head gasket seems in great shape.. when u say leak down test how would I perform that? I’m not that familiar with outboards… I didn’t see no cracks on the head gasket cover or water jacket.. I did order everything new since I took it apart.. I since took everything apart and all gaskets look good.. here some pictures

When testing in a bucket you need water about 8" above the impeller.-----And all those exhaust bubbles do not help a pump that was not designed to pump air.----Put it together and test on the boat out on the lake.

I had water maybe 3 inches from exhaust exit.. and still nothing but I was also thinking what u mentioned.. the exhaust exits from the propeller and cause the 55 gallon is small it might be sucking in the exhaust but it’s just a little weird. Cause it’s pee good for 15 or so seconds and then nothing at all not even a drop.. at this point the motor is all apart in my garage.. I bought all 8 different gaskets and I’m going to replace them all.. I also just bought the impeller housing just cause I saw some scoring in the inside.. I hope when I put this all together the problem is solved.. if not I’m in deep **** lol… should I add a little permatex silicone when installing all the gaskets and seals?
