Starting question

I have a 2000 175 Johnson. When I flush or test the outboard out of water (with an attached hose) it starts on the first or second try cold. No problem. But when I put in at the lake, it takes 2 minutes or so to start. Am I missing something here? When it starts at the lake, it runs fine and is good for the day. I figure there must be something submerged in the water--the exhaust?--that's affecting the start at the lake. One of my concerns is that I'll drain my cranking battery at the lake. I just bought the outboard, so I haven't learned too much yet. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Starting question

Welcome to iboats!

Yup, it's called back pressure.....on the muffs theres little back pressure. That's why it's best to do final carb mixture adjustments "on the water".

Re: Starting question

Thanks. So I guess this means that I need to make some adjustments with the carbs? I'm not a mechanic, so I'll probably have to take it to my boat shop.

Re: Starting question

One of the most common causes of "hard cold start" is improper starting procedures.
1. pump primer bulb till firm
2. lift hi-idle lever to start position
3. turn key to "on"
4. push in and hold key for 8 or 10 seconds
5. continue holding key in and turn to "start"
