Starter Gear Hits Flywheel At High Throttle

I just had my starter rebuilt after the old gear on the original starter was grinded out. The motor starts great now, but I have noticed that when I increase the throttle, the gear on the starter will get sucked up against the flywheel and go back down. This cycle then repeats. What can I do to fix this? Once again, newly rebuilt.

Depends on what year/model/motor you have. It is vibration that sucks it up against the flywheel. Some motors have an anti-drift spring above the gear. Some have a rubber bushing that touches the outside of the gear to stop the vibration. Etc.

There is a spring on the shaft above the gear. I'm not even sure if it really is hitting the flywheel. (Just don't want another ground out starter gear)

This might sound dumb, but would putting a magnet on the body of the starter help to hold it down a little bit while the engines running?

Re: Starter Gear Hits Flywheel At High Throttle

Any luck with this? I have a 115 hp 1969 that I just got out for the first time this weekend since buying it. Has a new starter on it and it floats up into the flywheel as well. Where do the vibes that cause it to float come from? I have a really bad prop that needs replacing, could this be causing it? Thanks! Christian
