Ok folks, I just became the proud owner of a 1972 Starcraft SS 16 ft. It’s going to undergo a full resto this winter, but right now I’m refusing to let go of summer and I’m looking at ladder options. I’m well aware that there are plenty of discussions on this topic on iBoats, but I haven’t come across anything that answers my question, which is:

Anyone who’s shopped for boat ladders has seen the extendable ladders that mount onto a swim platform or “any flat surface”...

I can’t find any reference to this type of ladder being used on the gunwale. So why is that? I was thinking of mounting it on the gunwale way back by the splashwell. Any reason why this would be a bad idea?

I’d have no issue with installing a swim platform on the transom, but I can’t really imagine climbing over the splashwell to board.

anyone have any thou?

The first time you hit a dock you'll know it wasn't a good idea. A folding ladder that hooks on the gunnel is a better way.

That makes sense. I guess I was thinking if the ladder was able to fold in so it wasn’t hanging over the side at all, it might be ok. I was more concerned that the gunwale might not be sturdy enough to have a ladder bolted through it.

thanks for your thoughts, GA 👍🏻

Your gunwale on a SS16 isn't designed to support that kind of torque. I added mine to the back on the transom during my rebuild.

If you really want a gunwale ladder, Ga boater 's suggestions is the best.

Thanks, SHSU. That’s what I was worried about. I’d love to mount the ladder to the transom like you did, but my splashwell is so big I find it hard to imagine climbing over it regularly without someone eventually falling through it.

Yep, the original design is a waste of space. I had the splashwell custom made so I could utilize the space better for livewells. Plus I didn't feel comfortable walking on it, to flimisy. Now I have no concerns when getting in and out of the boat or standing on it while doing stuff.
