Re: starcraft boat quality

What is it rated for? I have not seen any 16' Starcraft rated at anything close to 200hp. More like 50-90.

Re: starcraft boat quality

merc snapper is right what is it rated at because i would check that prior to powering it. Know i have had 17 boats. I have owned lots of aluminum boats and i always return to my starcraft. I fish it 5 days a week and have yet to have an issue with it. They are a bit light and in really big water i find its a bit front heavy, but i would not go away from the starcraft. if the boat is in good shape no popped rivits and no signifagetn leaks go buy it

Re: starcraft boat quality

Starcraft homepage says 90 hp max on their 2003 16' glassfibre boat.

40 hp on the 16' alu.

My Sea Ray 16 is rated for 125hp max.

200 sounds extremely dangerous. If you buy it, a swap to less power should be easy as there is always somebody looking for an upgrade.

merc16 - I hope you listen to UU. Not only is that motor dangerous from a speed point but you risk the stern wave comming in the back anytime you slow down due to the weight. I don't know what it is rated for but much over a 70-80 hp is an overkill in my opinion.

As to the Starcraft - I had one years ago - well made & durable.

Re: starcraft boat quality

We had a 16' Starcraft alu. center console. I cant remember the max rating on the boat, but we but a 60 hp Yamaha on it which was less the max for the boat and it ran great and very fast.

If you cause injury or damage with that 200 hp engine on a 16' Starcraft, expect living Hell from their lawyers, and no support from your insurer. If the boat is packaged with the 200, then walk away.

I love my Starcraft. It cuts waves better than a much heavier boat, and it easy to trailer.

But, mine leaks a lot. Always have to check the bilge. Would never leave it in the water overnight. Not a problem for a trailer boat with a good pump.

I had a 16'starcraft center console and if I remember right it was rated for 90hp.A 200 is way to much motor for that boat.Mine had a 70hp johnson and ran very well.

I have a 1968 16ft Starcraft Deepv which I recently refurbished. She is pushed with a 65' and has a 6' as a kicker...Even with the four batteries I have for my other toys she planes quick and is very smooth with the waves.
I think you may have a little to much horse for your class of boat...I've seenem with 90's but unless you are launching to the moon I would stay with something a little less...good luck

I had an 18' Starcraft CC with and 85 horse Evinrude on it, and that baby moved. It had to be flat calm or it bounced your chimes off.

A 200 horse sounds like way too much, you may even be doing damage to the transom with something that heavy.

That is also why I eventually got rid of it was due to the transom rotting. But for a first boat, it was alright, I was only 17 when I got that.

Re: starcraft boat quality

Merc16,

Here is my StarCraft experience...

I bought a used 15' fiberglass 1978 StarCraft TriStar (tri-hull) about two months ago. I have had it out every weekend since, finding and fixing all the little things the previous owner neglected.

Two things have happened with this hull that tell me this is a solid boat:

1) On first (or second?) outing, coming back into dock, shifter got stuck in forward and I bashed into the corner of the pier at about 12-15 mph; got a slight dent in rubrail, but no noticeable hull damage.

2) On most recent outing, the leaf spring shackle welds failed and the axle fell off the trailer as I was doing about 15-20 mph over speed bumps on a residential street. The bunk boards smashed to hell and the boat wound up resting on the bunk brackets (ouch!). A few deep gouges to the hull, but no evidence of puncture or cracking. In fact, the boat was resting on the bunks right along its two outer keel lines (tri-hull, remember), and the gouges exposed structural steel members in the keels...hows that for strength!

I do not know if StarCraft went to crappy hull construction in the 90's like most everyone else, but I certainly believe my boat can last another 30 years (once I get the trailer fixed!)

BTW, I have a 70hp Mercury O/B on it (the boat is rated for up to 100hp, and the hull weight is supposedly 850lb). According to GPS, it gets onto plane at 8-10mph, and does 35mph WOT on the bay, 40mph on nice, flat lake water. The prop is in only fair-to-good shape, and is slightly under pitched...so I bet it can do more!

Re: starcraft boat quality

sweet to hear that. i just got a 1976 15.5' starcraft trihull with a chrysler 105hp. Havent had it on the water due to have to put some work into the motor. After going through the whole boat it seams to be a very good and strong boat. At least compared to my last boat it was a 1981ish 15.5 foot Glastron with a 100hp johnson with low commpression..

i like my new boat better.... ;-)

Re: starcraft boat quality

My 87 19 ft seems to be a well built hull...A little gel-coat fade but the boat is still solid!
For a boat that is almost 20 years old i think it has done very well!

200 hp sounds like a LOT of fun, but I don't think I would push a 16 footer with that much power....
we call that an AIRPLANE lol

Here's my 34 year old, 1972 Starcraft model " 15' Jetstream-V "
in a couple pictures that I took today being pushed by a 1972 Johnson " 50ESL72C " 50 hp loop charged twin.
My GPS clocked it at 42 MPH in these pictures.
Starcraft Quality speaks for itself.....
This boat rocks !
