Standing vs sitting?

I've been on this board for a while now and there's a lot of differences in the style of fishing I've noticed. In particular you guys in the US of A seem to enjoy using centre consol type boats and stand up fishing.
Is this a perticular trait? Is the fishing better? Is this fresh water related or salt or both? Shallow or deep? Fly or bait?
I know it's a lot of questions but I'm curious.
Ross

Ross,

Once you've fished a center console, you'll never go back. Balance and visibility are much better, not to mention cockpit space and the abilility to fight a fish all the way around the boat.

Centers were popularized in salt water but are making their way into fresh.

Re: Standing vs sitting?

It seems that for fighting an active fish (ie salmon, all species) that the center console works best due to the ease of movement. Not only for the person with the fish on, but it makes it easier for others to move out of the way and/or position a landing net correctly. Most of the freshwater guides here in Alaska use CC boats. It gives them more fishing seats in the boat as well.

Saltwater or inclement weather (saltwater here!) fishing is still mostly sedan style boats. Bigger cockpits with a cabin for comfort. The trips to the fishing spot are generally a lot longer and the fish are more seditary. (Halibut and Cod) Shark fishing is another matter altogether...

Kev_Alask***

Stand up while fishing???? who does that i just drop a bait over the side and lay down. Actually depending on how I am fishing I stand, sit or yes even lay down. Lures=standing up I have more control over casts and can work the lure better. Live or cut baits=sitting or perhaps laying down except for the cast.
BTW Laying down is sometimes called sleeping monkey but my style is noisy bear.

Having a rather small boat(16')the center console works great keeping the passenger load centered and when it comes time to move around, you have walkways on both sides. I use mine in rivers, lakes and in the bay. Probably the best multipupose rig I've ever owned. :p

Re: Standing vs sitting?

If I am bass fishing I usualy stand. I do a lot of pitching and flipping (dragon on lotus). I find that I cast better standing. Any other fishing I do sitting down. If there are kids in the boat, Bouncing Monkey Style Gung Fu is appropriate. :D All my fishing is done in fresh water. I have a bass boat and a jon boat.

LOL Crab,

Kinda set myself up didnt I :D Send me some if have any to spare!!! I will have some ocean front property For Sale. Heck, I might even include a Bridge with it...

I guess the reason I said that is one of my fishing buddies was in Texas at the time with his new son-in-law fishing for red fish and snook... He was rubbing it in hard, talking about how hard they fight and such.

I have only been saltwater fishing once as a kid at mobile bay ( only caught one small salt cat :( )... Wife doesnt want me to pack fishing stuff when we go to Florida. Gonna have to try Derwoods suggestion. :D

Re: Standing vs sitting?

bKelly I have a suggestion... Get a new wife LOL. In reality vacationing in FLA and trying to fish w/o a boat is not realy worth packing the gear unless you already know something about fishing S/W. There are hundreds of places you can fish both inshore and offshore and some are better than others but you do need to know what to fish for and how to fish for it. If what you will be doing is spending a week on the beach or just chilling out then bring the gear and fish a few of those days you can catch fish and learn a lot. If you are gonna be doing the tourist thing and will only have a little time to fish then I suggest you just save on the space.

Been there done that BKelly. Just Came back from one of those Honey Do Vacations. Must Admit I had a Pretty good Time. I'd forget alot of VoodooWoods suggestions(not enough Room).Tissue Boxes are great way to hide a few lures and The Spare Tire Compartment will hold a compact Rod and Reel plus your favorite fishing Hat. Still can't Figure out why all those people were standing ankle deep in a Stream and fishing like their was no tommorrow. Some of the Treasures they were pulling out were about the size of some of my Lures I use as Crankbait.

Re: Standing vs sitting?

I prefer to sit. Even when I'm casting with the minnkota churning, I'm sitting. I got the raised platforms, but I have the big comfy seats on pedestals in them. If the water's rough, I sit at the console and throw out the drift sock(got the drink holders at the console - rough water = spilled beer) . Got to target them elusive Wally-fish, whatever the cost.

Re: Standing vs sitting?

Hey Ross,

I prefer to stand....A swan dive from a sitting position is not pretty.

I like to stand because I fish in shallow water all the time and if your sitting you miss alot of stuff.

Alot of the coast of west FL. is flats that are realy shallow and there are rocks everywhere. Not to mention all sorts of other stuff.

About 2 months ago I was cruisen at high warp in the shady when I noticed a couple of (guess) 100 lb tarpon feeding on some bait.

I was not fishing for them but its nice to see them so I was rubber necking.

When I got just far enough away that I could not see them I looked foward again....glad I did....I know the area and there were no rocks around but just as I turned my head I saw it.

I ran slap over the 14 ft shark that was hunting them....not sure what kind it was....I was going pretty fast (well..fast for the shady).

I saw it just in time to grab hold of the C.Console for a brace....Thawap....He got a new tatoo and I almost soiled myself.

He was in 3 ft of water fixen to make a run on um while they were preoccupied with feeding.

Dude....That was one BIG shark and I was in one SMALL boat.

There is always a rock that sprouts up in a new spot or a sea turtle (I see lots of them) cruiseing around looking for food....not to mention schools of fish that I will stop to try my gung fu on. Its always a good idea to stand while running between spots in the gulf for safetys sake.

Another reason to stand for me is that all of my boats are flat bottom and so are alot of other flats boats. When you are cruiseing at warp in shallow water or rough water in a flat bottom boat you can take a pretty good whoopen and standing lets you use your knees to absorb some of the shock so you don't take such a beating.

Just ask anyone who has sat down in the front of one on the floor because of a lack of seats. My freind has one seat in his boat and it's right behind the console.

Now rather than sit behind him giving him a nostrel enima every time he hit a wave I opted to sit in the front of the boat where there was room....I paid for that with much pain.

I don't fish with him anymore cause I won't do that again, no how, no way!

Thats my two cents on the matter....some may disagree....but thats why I prefure to stand.

All the other reasons mentioned are good ones as well.

buttsaverwood.

Re: Standing vs sitting?

Who's the best bass fisherman while sitting down?

Gotta be Bill Dance. He's the king of sportfishing while in the seated position. I personally prefer to stand up. I miss less fish that way.

Re: Standing vs sitting?

I run a 21 foot center console in the Northeast(saltwater). I would call it more of a leaning into vs. standing. When drift fishing, the water is usually rough in the rips, so you kinda lean into the console or the seats or the gunnels. When plugging or casting, I definatly stand. I couldn't imagine trying to set on a big striper sitting. SJ

Re: Standing vs sitting?

Well it all depends on the person. For me at over 300#'s, if I stand to long, my knees hurt and I am not the most agile fellow neither, but to each his own.
