HELP. I just had impeller and lower water pump replaced after a major overheat. I have a Merc. 3.7 4 cyl. I believe Alpha 1. I/O. 190 Hrsp. After getting it back from the shop I took it for a test run.. Seem to run just fine temp was stable at about 140-145. After about an hour or so the temp moved to 155 and then the engine seem to short out as if there was not any fuel getting in to the carb. After cooling down and arguing with the batteries that acted dead it did start back up and again after cruising for a short distance it did it again and again.. I did clean the fuel filter and the filter that goes into the carb, took it out again for a run and after an hour and the temp jump to 155 or so same thing all of a sudden cruising just fine and then shut down. Please any help.

Re: Stalls after 1 hour

I had the same problem 87 350 merc. I thought it was vapor lock and after replacing several parts I found it was the magnetic eye inside the dist. Like clock work it would run in the driveway for 30 minutes then choke and sputter then die, 15 minutes later it would start back up again. I hooked a timing light to it and watched the timing every ten minutes and it moved running the same rpm until finally 28 minutes into it the timing was bouncing all over.

Thanks Jack and Spot for your help. I will try again this weekend. Jack you said check the coil. I am new at this repair stuff. Do you mean the Ignition coil? Is that the only coil?

Re: Stalls after 1 hour

To help it is the coil that connect to your center plug wire out of your distributer cap. <br />I am in the same issue having my 350 bog after heat up. I may be getting vapor lock and will attempt to heat tape the lines next to the engine but will keep an eye on the elec ignition slip as for the coil. I dont think the coil is bad but feel the vapor lock is causing my low speed idel to cut off the engine and hard to start. My high speed seems good if I can get is started again and out into gear to move it.
