does anyone know if the spline shape and size is a standard such as GM or Ford? i have a 250 cu in, inline 6 bought in 78. auto parts stores sell clutch alignment tools made of wood that might be used for engine alignment with some mods.

I always used a dowel rod that fit snug inside the coupler.

I used a old broom stick (the wife was not happy). If you cant find anything off hand (try anything long and straight) measure the drive shafts width (inside the splines) on the outdrive. All it really has to do is go all the way in the coupler and fit snug.

I think ya'll are missing something here. The hole in the gimbal bearing is larger than the hole in the couplier. Unless something fits snugly in the gimbal and snug in the couplier, you will not get the alignment correct. That's why the alignment tool has several step downs. If nothing else, I'd remove the shaft from the end of the outdrive and use it to align the couplier. When it slides in and out easily, its there.
