Spark Plugs for 5.0 GI

I may get battered for this question (at least its not about what is the best oil, haha). I have a 2000 Four Winns with the 5.0 L GI engine. It currently has the Champion RS12YC plugs in it. I am not a fan of Champion and have noticed in other threads that they are not welcomed either. My Volvo manual shows the part numbers for Champion and AC (which is what I would like to use). The only problem is, they left the column blank under the AC section for the fuel injected 5.0 got 1999-2001. in 1998 they had a note that says to only use a Volvo plug or Champion plug.


Am I missing something? What is wrong with using a MR43LTS like all the other engines? The 4.3, 5.7, and 7.4 GI engines all have a column for the AC plug except for the 5.0 GI.

Volvo is in bed with Champion for some reason. Volvo doesn't even sell the OEM plugs, and on their website and and newer manuals the only thing they do is list a Volvo number so you don't know what to use. If you do order the Volvo part numbers, you get champion plugs in a Volvo box :facepalm:

Use the AC or NGK plugs, they work better and are what everyone else in the marine industry use on IO engines.

Which ones? MR43LTS?

AC makes the MR43 plugs. Those are what came in it from GM

I was able to get the MR43LTS from Advance Auto. NAPA only had two of them. The MR43LTS are about half an inch longer than the MR43T. They were the same length as the Champions that I took out. I think it will run better now!

Yes, you need the MR43LTS, I just didn't use the full number earlier :facepalm:

Crap. Didn't know any better and just bought Champions because that's what was in the boat. Are they worth trying to return? Not even sure if I can.

You cant't return used spark plugs to exchange for a different brand :facepalm:
