Has anyone ever made the trip from the Jones Inlet to the Shinnecock Locks? If so, how long did it take?

Re: South Shore Long Island

i have done the full trip in steps includeing going into peconic bay and out to greenport and points beyond

i do go from robert moses to the locks and back as a nice day trip.

its must be less than 40 miles so its not really a long trip BUT you really have to watch your charts the channles are very narrow before the robert moses bridge ,things are pretty good between there and bellport after that it gets very narrow and shalow for a good way a lot of 2' water just a littel bit out of the channel

once you get to peconic bay you will think you died and went to heaven deep water and just really nice

you need to plan your fuel stops well also most places are hidden in small marinas that you will never find if you dont plan ahead

i like to launch at a place like strongs on the peconic and pay to leave the boat and trailer for a few days the bay and shelter island are just a much nicer place because of the deep water

tommays

I would highly recommend to plan going through Patchogue and Bellport and Moriches AT high tide. That part of the run should last around 30-45 minutes and could be much longer if at low tide.Very very easy to run aground in that stretch.Patchogue river is a great place to gas up and there are a few very good restuarantes there too.If it is a Sunday you should plan to catch a steel drum band and a drink there too.Charlie

The only problem with Patchogue river is there isn't much transient docking. If you go all the way north on the river (all of 1/2 mile) the Harbor Crab is there. Great sea food. I may be prejudice, my brother-in-law is the chef.

On the Connectquot River in Oakdale has several restaurants and bars on it.

Brown's river in Sayville has a place right at the mouth of the river on the west bank and further up, just past the ferry docks, is a little seafood restaurant that is great and very reasonably priced. Right now the name escapes me.

Swan Creek in East Patchogue has a local bar on the west bank near the mouth of the creek. Further north on the east side is the Pine Grove Inn with transient docking. Good german food.

Senix Creek in Moriches has the Senix Creek Inn. Another local favorite.

Going from Bellport Bay to Moriches Bay is very narrow, but the channel is well marked.

Re: South Shore Long Island

Tom, Charlie & Chuck, Thanks for the sage advice. I am going to be keeping my boat in Merrick and my sister has a place in the hamptons and figured I would be able to run it out there for the weekend a couple of times during the summer to get a little peconic fishing in. I was looking at the charts and it looked pretty narrow around Quogue but didn't know about the shallows around RM Bridge....I think I will wait until I have an idea of what kind of gas mileage I can expect before making the trip.

One more thing, I still haven't bought a boat but had narrowed it down to either a 20ft Striper WA or a 20ft Proline WA. I had asked in another forum about comparing the two, and later found out that there is a 10" difference in draft. The question for you experenced South shore guys is; Will I be getting myself in trouble with a Striper with a 29" draft vs. a Proline with a 19"?

Pic of my Dad and my boat on the Peconic Bay at Jessup Neck last summer. Across the water is the North Fork, the towns of Bay View and Laughing Waters. Go around the sand dunes at the end of Jessup Neck and you come to Shelter Island, head over to the Shelter Island Sound and tie up at the Sag Harbor Long Warf. From there you can walk main street, do some shopping and get a bite to eat at the Corner Bar.

Re: South Shore Long Island

if i recall the trade off was draft VS geting wet the shallow draft is much better for a bay boat but its a choppy place in the afternoon and wet is not fun

whats the chance of testing both boats ?

tommays
