My son just purchased an old Starcraft boat he wants to restore. It is a 1974 with a 70hp Johnson outboard. The trailer is a 1987 Magic tilt. He paid $1,000. Is that a good deal?

Looks like its in good shape and if the motor runs its a great deal. You didn't say if this was his/your first boat. Make sure to change impeller (water pump) before you use it. There is a Starcraft Forum you need to check out too. It has all information you will need. Welcome

Your son has done well for himself at first glance. I like that boat, motor and trailer. Yup he got a good deal:D

The trailer looks galvanized from here, if so that is a nice score, and it is an '87 which isn't too bad either.

That outboard has one of the best power/weight ratios out and I'm looking for one just like it for my SuperSport.

There are a ton of restoration threads, many Starcraft aluminum and wfralpacas has done a great job with the same boat.

Good luck!

Man! What a cool looking boat! I'm really starting to love SC based on all the restorations in the forum. I was wondering if my memory was correct and so I looked and people here have paid $600 to $750 for smaller boats in worse shape with a worse trailer and they were giddy! I would say, as others have said, that your son did very well and you better make him document every step! ;)

Cheers and full steam ahead!

We can't find a hull data plate. Does anyone know where it might be located? Also, it needs a portside gunwhale cap on the stern, not sure where to get one.

Here are some end caps. http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/boa/1970885362.html

The data plate should be on the port side near the gunwale, mine was missing and I got a replacement made. If you need the info that would be on the plate check out the brochures.

Re: Son's Starcraft restoration

Thanks guys.
A little maintenance to the motor, nav. lighting and trailer and we're ready to go get some Specs and Stripers in the Chesapeake. He's decided to get some use out of it before he tears it down. Fall Striper season can run until the end of the year if the water stays above 50.
When he decides to restore it I'll post more pics. This forum has some great ideas and information that will save him time and money. Thank you in advance. :)
