Sonar types

I'm currently looking into a gps/sonar unit for my new boat. I am looking at something in the price range of $300 - $600. Is a transom mount transducer any better than a through hull mount transducer for the sonar?

I tend to go with a transom mount,it is easier to clean when it gets deposits on it.<br />I also recommend not getting a gps/sounder combo. Buy seperate units.
