I tried to go waterfowl hunting today at Lake Buffum in Polk county. What I saw shocked me. The end of the boat ramp was literally 100 yards from the water. A sign said. "closed due to low water". This August was the second wettest on record! It looks like we have lost public acces for a very long time. I doubt the county can give me a answer. Any ideas as to why the lake is at a historic low during record high rainfall?

We have a lake like that here. It's a pretty decent sized one in town with a lot of high end homes with unusable shore. We aren't in a drout and the other surrounding lakes are full. They are going to do a study to figure out where the water went. In past years we have been in drouts but not any longer but it only gets worse. Lots of prop and lower unit damage out there.

My guess would be sinkholes, no reason why they can't happen at the bottom of a lake, The water table under Florida has been being depleted for years, so there is a lot of vacant space underground.

stories like this are always sad to hear, a lake near my hometown in nebraska has been down most of my life but reacently recovered only for the A.C.E. to discover a huge hole in the dam and had to let all the water out to keep the dam from colapsing. i hope ur lake recovers soon our lake now has a huge algy prob now cause its so low.

I saw something about why Lake Okeechobee is shrinking awhile back but can't remember exactly. I think it has something to do with the water table too.

Don't feel bad...the lakes up North are low too.....and rivers......some lakes I can't launch in because of low water....plus the hazards are close to the top now....real prop rippers.....

one pond I fish my truck was in the water 15 feet from shore before the boat would float....

We did not have much rain all summer....and the Aguafiers are low also....

Yup......the Big "O" was down several feet and is back to normal. Corps of #&*@#$ Engineers, but that's another subject altogether.

Here in Canada, (Quebec) the 2 major rivers I have been fishing on twice a week for over 40 years is so low on water that I could not use the boat ramp even once this year. Go figure ....
