Soft tackle bags

I need to find a soft tackle bag that will last more than a month. I like 3600 series for the lighter weight. This spring I bought one from Bass Pro and within a month the top zipper ripped out of the fabric. I returned it and bought a Browning with an external tool holder. Within a month the tool holder ripped away from the bag. It didn't just rip out the threads. If it was the threads I could remove the pocket and live with it but the fabric itself ripped leaving a hole in the side pocket.

I am not particularly hard on equipment. I only fish in fair weather. Boat is always stored under a carport so equipment is never exposed to moisture or sun. I never stuff the bag to the point where zippers pull.

Is there a bag made out of quality material that will hold up. I need a few small pockets, center pocket, don't particularly like hard glass cases. Maybe some fisherman is in the business of making bags using quality material. 0 for 2 for the season is not very good.

Any help appreciated.

As with anything, you get what you pay for.

My last bag was a Plano guide series. It was canvas and a bit pricy, but it last almost 6 years before the zippers gave out due to saltwater corrosion. I bought another Plano and its going on year three.

Re: Soft tackle bags

I have a plano with no complaints. It has a plastic shell on the inside so it's not truly a soft bag but when it is full of tackle trays it doesn't matter anyways.

Because I do a lot of shore fishing my next tackle box/bag will be a back pack. I can stuff the tackle trays in there all the same and wear it on my back while walking the shore fishing. Right now I just stuff my pockets with a few things (Pliers, digital scale, pack a soft plastics, and pack of spare hooks to be exact) and fish. My BIL does the backpack for a tackle box thing and it works out pretty darn good.

Re: Soft tackle bags

I got tired of going through tackle bags too, so once when I went to Academy to buy another one I walked right past the fishing section and back to the luggage section. There I found all sorts of bags in the $20 range that were the perfect size and shape to hold a bunch of large boxes. Been doing it that way ever since. Currently use a camo bag with wheels and a pull-up handle. When it wears out, which will be a while, I'll just get another one. Just a thought.

I wound up going to Cabalas and buying one from them. We'll see how it lasts. If this one rips out I am going to go the luggage route. The material and stitches are tougher with luggage. And not a lot of difference in weight.

i still can't figure out why anyone would want a soft tackle bag anyway! My plano hard box sheds water and protects everything well!

The luggage bag with wheels sounds appealing, however.

I use the spider wire bag from academy. Its about twice as much as their other bags, bur well worth it. It's well designed and very well constructed. The okeechobee I bough there before was junk.

The nice thing about the soft sides is the versatility. You can keep the flat boxes loaded and organized however you want and add or remove them according to location, method, species, etc. Also, you'd be surprised by how well they shed water. And, if you're like me and carry about seventeen times as much gear as you need:redface:the shoulder strap comes in very handy. I do still have my old Plano box that was my granddaddy's though. Won't ever get rid of that one.

I hand sewed some pouches out of marine vinyl that snap on the inside of the boat, great for storing plastic lures, weights needle nose, paper towels and the like, you don't have to mess with a bulky tackel box.
