Folks,

Saw some posts on replacing fibreglass and foam, here is a short long story.

Deck was soft, replace deck.
Pull deck find, previous owner put 1/2 deck over first deck.
Pull Second deck, consoles (side console)
Find, bad cross members
Pull cross members, find bad stringers,
Pull stringers, find hole in tank, crack in hull
Find soft spots in transom, cut back, find more
remove transom, grind glass down to original hull
Find rotted wood in gunnel
Replace gunnel.

I am almost to the end, new transom, new stringers, new cross members, new gunnel, new foam, new tank, new hatches, NEW BOAT!

Short story: once you pull the deck, man can you open a can of worms, has been a labor of love for sure.

Will advise on maiden voyage. Just hope I can get the motor running as well as the rest of the boat.

Ed.

Ed,
I hope you got that boat for an extremely good price. How much do you think you spent so far on the repairs? What kind of boat and motor? :)

Enso,

Pretty good price, bought in 1996, 18' Mitchell, 140 Johnson, trailer, $3500.

Had at dock in water for three years, pulled it out of the water before last huricane that passed us by.

Costs so far (not counting power tools, which I now have a pretty good collection of, sawzall is my favorite) about $1,200.

I decided to use epoxy resin for all rebuild work which bumped the cost up. Also next door neighbor sells wholesale boat parts and supplies, go great deals on tank, hatches, etc.

Most costly part was time, if I add all the time in actual cost $500,000 :)

Has been fun, learned lots, expect to pass this one on for the next several generations.

Cheers.

emp.
