I recently got my 85 Johnson 6 hp Sailmaster running. I may have the gas gas mixed a bit too strong at about 20 or 30:1 instead of 50:1. Would this cause my motor to smoke LIKE its on FIRE???
Everything is operating as it should, exhaust is blowing strong jet of water but motor smokes like heck!!

Is it not uncommon for an 85 Johnson to smoke alot or sdo I need to investigate further??

Any feedback on what else I can troubleshoot for heavy smoke would be muuuuuch appreciated!

Thanks!!

Jason

Need too know if the smoke is white, blue etc and is it coming from the exhaust, under the cowl? Have you added any kind of additive to see if could free up stuck rings etc?(seafoam might help)

Hi Elvis
First of all you need to mix up a fresh batch of fuel, with a known proper ratio of 50:1. Well let me see, 20 no maybe 30:1 hell you don't know what you have. Excessive smoke is caused by, an over rich oil ratio or an over rich air fuel mix in the carb or both. Correctly mixed fuel will rule out the first problem.

Telman, Thanks for the reply- smoke is white and is quite thick- so cant really disseminate EXACTLY where its coming from....appears to be a little from under the cowling as wells as the exhaust. What additives do you recommend? I havent tried a single additive.
All this is pending mixing fresh fuel, of course.

Hi Elvis, dont use additives in two strokes!!Apart from stabilizer if you arent going to use the boat for a while.. Use fresh gas & oil mixed in the correct ratio for your engine.Next time you are burning anything throw a few green branches/leaves on the fire & see how much smoke you create. This is what you are doing to your motor by puttting extra oil in the mix.Check float levels keep the engine well tuned & use the right fuel mix will solve your smoking problems guaranteed!! :)
