Need some recommendations for small engine forums. I am trying to save a 2004 Tecumseh HM-100 that powers a generator. It starts on the the first pull every time but after warm-up, it pops and surges badly. Thanks, WC

did you start by cleaning the carb? sounds like the idle circuit is plugged

If it runs better when you pull the choke out partway, then the engine is running too lean, might need a carb cleaning.
some of the best you tube channels for small engines

steve's small engines
check them out, both very good.
small engine carbs are pretty easy to rebuild.

+1 on this. Many times it is cheap and easy to just buy a new carb and replace it. Not sure what carb you have but I have bought replacement carbs from $15 to $35, popped them in and Bob's your Uncle.

Time is money sometimes, an hour or two cleaning a carb versus popping on a new carb.

mytractorforum has a pretty good small engine section. However that probably needs a carb rebuild. For the cost of a rebuild you can get a decent aftermarket. Check Amazon for HM 100 carb

Thanks for all the prompt & helpful responses! I originally thought it was a "dirty" carb and replaced it plus a new filter. Have since replaced the fuel line due to age deterioration concerns although none seen. Cleaned the tank also. Identical problem after warm-up. Did identify source of long-term oil leak as the crankcase ventilation hose connected directly to carb. Found oil draining out the air filter housing. I capped the carb hose-barb and have it venting overboard, which after two sessions of running 10-15 minutes each, no oil being ejected. I now suspect all these years of oil splatter around the front motor housing may have dirtied the flywheel, coil, ground, etc. in the ignition circuit and plan to inspect/clean soon. FYI, only use E-free fuel with Stabil. Will report back!
