I have a 1985 Cobalt 5.7 litre with an OMC 800 outdrive. It goes into reverse fine but stays at idle/will not give aditional power to back off the trailer or hasten a forward stop. Any ideas would be appreciated. Rich

Re: Slow speed in reverse:

Need to pull the cover of your shifter and inspect there. Sounds like something is broke or disconnected inside there.

I'm thinking the ESA switch is misadjusted. Try unplugging your 2 ESA switches for diagnostic purposes. But dont leave them unplugged or it will be tough to get back to neutral and will stress the shift cable.

Sorry, but I don't know what an ESA switch is or where it is located. I thought all the linkage was mechanical in 85. Rich

Re: Slow speed in reverse:

I pulled the shifter. Only problem was a screw had backed out and was keeping the shift lever from moving full range. Thanks for the help! Rich
