Shutting down when on neutral

Having this problem since I bought the boat.
It's a 200HP Mercury from 96.

When I put the motor on neutral it turns off. If I give it a little gas it works fine. Only dies when no gas is applied.

What should I check first?

What model motor? Carb or EFI?

A carbed motor could have a problem with dirty idle circuits not passing enough fuel.

An EFI could be idle timing messed with.

It's the carb version.
I'd like to do whatever I can first before calling a mechanic.

Any suggestions on what to look for?
